Nor are we to believe that God has need of being reminded through our words. We are not to think that we complete our prayer by murmuring a number of syllables, but rather, O Brethren, by the purpose of our soul, and in deeds of virtue extending into every action and moment of our life. Neither are we to think that God needs the reminder of our spoken words; rather are we to believe that He knows our need whether we ask of Him or not. Dennis Meeker, his wife, and the church/medical
clinic that they are serving in Kenya. [I realize that some of you
know Dennis and Lorna, too.] A copy of the email Rev. Meeker sent
is below for those of you who did not get it already. I ask that you
keep them all in your prayers.

As you can imagine, there is much need for monetary help there. I
communicated with Rev. Meeker this afternoon and I have information
on how to get financial aid to them. I am asking you to prayerfully
consider helping God's servants in need. Also, please pass this
information along to others, as the need is great and the more
donations the better. Here's a way you can offer financial help.
Send a check to my church - Trinity Lutheran Church Manito (address
below) with "Missions" written in the memo line. We will collect the
monies and then donate them as one lump sum to an organization that
is offering to match the funds for them - thereby doubling your
donation. All donations are tax deductible and you will receive a
receipt of your donation. Since the need is urgent, please act as
quickly as possible - although any donations will be accepted
regardless of how long they take to come in. If you have questions,
please don't hesitate to ask! Thanks in advance.

Yours, in Christ,

Dan Chambers
Trinity Lutheran Church
110 S. Park Ave
Manito, IL 61546
309-968-6984
.........................................
Dear Brothers in Christ,

In the midst of turmoil caused by the Presidential election I wish to
inform you that Springs of Life Lutheran Church and Medical Clinic
has suffered severe damage as rioters looted everything and then set
it on fire. Our nursery school has also been looted and burned. It
happened in the early afternoon 3rd of January. Please continue to
pray for us. We thank God our faith is not in material possessions.

Our faith will stand firm and we pray God's intervention for the sake
of Kenya. Jesus said: "I will never leave you or forsake you" Lorna
and I are fine in the midst of much sorrow. We live away from the
high tension zone and communicate by phone to our people in the area.
We rejoice in the fact that faith does not burn and the church is
never destroyed.

Yours in Christ,

Rev. And there are still spots to sign up to bring soup or other "stuff." We like to have the supper so that everyone -- including those coming late from work can come straight to church and not have to worry about cooking that evening. Come and enjoy a time of food and fellowship, and then enjoy a time of prayer preparing for the Savior's birth.

Covered dish again this Sunday

This coming Sunday, Dec. 2, we'll have our monthly covered dish dinner.

Continuing our theme for our anniversary celebration, the theme for this month's covered dish is missions. So consider bringing something international, maybe even a bit exotic, to mark the theme of missions.

(Just a note ... if exotic to you means fried grasshoppers or something like that, you'll have to eat it yourself. We're anticipating having a dinner on the evening of Saturday, June 14, 2008, and then a celebration service the following morning, Sunday, June 15.

Several ways you can help:

1. If you have someone's address who used to be with us, make sure the committee has the address and phone number. Please don't assume that someone else has already given it. When in doubt, better to have 2 people giving us the address than no one.

2. Read the bulletin board (the smaller one) for details, and when possible, help out with the plans. There's a lot to be done, and you can help, too.

Summertime

It's summertime (or almost: there are always picky people who point out to me that summer doesn't start until June 21st), and the living is easy.

Well, it's certainly hot, at least in North Carolina.

Redeemer's summertime schedule will be pretty much the same during the summer, except that Sunday School for the youth will not be held. And it's easy to
forget that we are preparing for the time when we will
receive the greatest of gifts, our Savior, born at Christmas.

So I would encourage all of us to spare a bit of
time each week for the mid-week Advent services.
These services will take place each Wednesday
evening here at the church, at 7:30, and will
last around 30 minutes or so.

We'll be having a light soup supper preceding each
service so we can fellowship for a bit, and also to
give those who have to cook a bit of a break during
this crazy time. (But if you'd like to cook up a pot
of soup, we always welcome that during this cold time
of the year!)

So give yourself a bit of breathing space. Come
Wednesday evenings, and quiet your soul in a time
of waiting. Waiting for the Savior Who comes to
you this time of year.

A New Song

King David said it better than I can, “And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the LORD.” (Psalm 40:3)

That’s a little of how everyone felt on Sunday, Nov. 19, when Redeemer dedicated our new service book for use in the praise and worship of God. Because while there’s much that’s familiar with this new book (the Lutheran Service Book), there’s also much that’s new, especially in the way of hymns. We spent the service getting used to our new books, and learning a little bit of how they work.

A couple of things to notice. First, it’s a “service” book, and while as Pastor Tessmann mentioned on Sunday, we’re very likely to begin calling it the “hymnal” pretty quickly, it’s more than a hymnal. Because a hymnal is just that: a collection of hymns. This book, on the other hand, provides for the services of God’s church, here at Redeemer and elsewhere. It has not only the Sunday morning services, but service orders for weddings, confession, and prayer services. And since we are a singing church, the hymns, of course, are there, too, many of the beautiful hymns we know and love, and new ones as well: many recently written hymns that are beautiful while at the same teaching the orthodox Christian faith in its fullness.

It’s important to notice why we call this a “service” book. We call our worship the “Divine Service,” and it’s important to remember that. Because the most important part of what goes on is not our worship of God -- as important as that is. No, the most important part is that God serves us. He speaks to us in the Scriptures, He speaks to us in the sermon, and He serves us a foretaste of the heavenly banquet here, when He serves us His own Body and Blood in the Lord’s Supper.

As a practical matter, the new service book is arranged well, and designed to be practical for use in the services. The page numbers go from beginning to end, beginning with the Psalms. When we use, say, Psalm 16, as we did on Sunday, we find Psalm 16 on the 16th page of the book. Psalm 82 would likewise be on the 82nd page. And so forth. In other words, there’s no turning back and forth between the numbers of the Psalms and the pages of the rest of the book. This should especially make it simpler when guests are here.

Another practical matter is that this is a book not just for Sunday mornings. It’s a book you can use every day of your life, as a guide for your prayers, a source of joyful singing in your daily life, and a means of learning more about the God Who loves and cares for you. No one will object if you take a book home with you this Sunday for the week. Read it, learn from it, and grow in your faith.

New Hymnals, and A Liturgy of Instruction ...

OK, so that's a strange title, but maybe it caught your attention : )

This coming Sunday, November 19, we will begin using our new hymnals, the Lutheran Service Book.

In place of the sermon, Pastor Tessmann will be going through the service, explaining the why and wherefore of each part of the service. So if you've ever wondered, "Why do we stand when we do?," or "Why do we have 3 readings?" or "What's the meaning of the Collect?," then you need to be there. (We need to be there anyway -- after all, this is the time when God gives out His gifts -- but this will be a special time of learning and understanding how and why we worship as we do.

(Besides ... the new hymnal is an extremely cool book. There's a lot of good stuff there. He and his wife Peggy were members of the first parish I served. Melvin died of cancer recently. Oh, he was a hoot and half. He loved to laugh; he was kind of shy, but oh, so much fun. My all time favorite Melvin story is this:

He was taking a shower, and thought he and Peggy were home alone. Peggy dropped something in the kitchen with a loud bang and Melvin comes running from the shower to see if she is alright, only to find her talking to a lady friend in the kitchen. You guessed it, Melvin was wearing only his birthday suit!

How Peggy and Melvin laughed when they told that story. I swear, Melvin still blushed just thinking about it. He was so mortified!!! Lord, have mercy.

I remember something else about Melvin. He taught me that many people really don't care for their work. I was a naive 26 year old who assumed everyone did what they did because they loved doing it. He taught me differently. The look of pity in his eyes when he asked me if I *really* thought that.

Peggy, who has the coolest accent you've ever heard, is my youngest daughter's godmother. She and Melvin taught us a lot about loving others, serving without complaining or expecting recognition, just for the joy of being together and working side by side. Mel, we will ALWAYS love you. Nothing about God. Nothing about the Christian faith.

And you get into a conversation with this person. Maybe lots of conversations. And you’re telling them about your faith. And you’ve quoted a lot of Bible verses to them, and your neighbor tells you, “You know, I’ve never read the Bible. I don’t know anything about it, but I’d like to read some of it. Where should I start?”

This is the hard part. It’s good that your neighbor asked, because some people just pick up a Bible, and start reading at the beginning.

And that’s good. They’ve made a start. But the Bible is not just one book -- it’s a lot of books. Actually, it’s a library of 66 books. And while all of the Bible is given by inspiration to us (II Timothy 3:16: “All scripture is given by inspiration of God”) some parts are just easier to read than others. For example, it’s OK when people start with Genesis. Genesis tells us how the world began, about the fall into sin, about the promise of a coming Savior (Genesis 3:15), about Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Joseph. Exodus is good, too, telling us about the people of God in Egypt, and about God’s deliverance from their bondage.

But most people who’ve gone this far run into problems when they hit Leviticus. Because Leviticus is important, but most people who are new to the Bible find it hard going. And often they stop right there. And stopping there, they miss out on all the wonderful stuff that follows -- especially the story in the gospels of the Savior who died to take away their sins.

So here’s a plan. If your neighbor, or a friend, or your nephew -- or whoever -- wants to start reading the Bible, here’s a study guide that will help them through the incredible story of God’s word, of God’s deliverance, of God’s love for us.

First, start with the story of Jesus. The rest is important, but the gospels are the crucial part of the Bible. The gospel of Mark is a good place to start. It’s only 16 chapters, and it’s a fast-paced, action read. After reading that, read the other gospels: Matthew, Luke, and John. Encourage them to read carefully, but not get bogged down. Reading a chapter a day isn’t too much, and reading enough keeps the story flowing.

After the gospels, go to Genesis. Then back to the New Testament: this time to the book of Acts, which is the exciting story of how God’s church grew after Christ rose from the dead.

By now, our reader should be getting a feel for God’s word, and it’s time to hit some of the heavier stuff: Paul’s letters. Start with Romans, read 1st and 2nd Corinthians, and then Galatians, and the short letters to churches that Paul wrote from prison: Ephesians, Colossians, Philippians, and Philemon. Continue on with the other New Testament letters.

Now that our reader has gotten this far, he’s well into understanding the Bible, and can go on ahead with what happens to interest him -- perhaps the Psalms (although it’s important to remember that the Psalms are primarily written to be prayed, rather than simply to be read), the Old Testament history books (such as Joshua, Judges, 1st and 2nd Samuel) or some of the books of prophecy (such as Daniel, Isaiah, or Revelation).

And what’s the most important thing to remember when reading the Bible? Well, the most important thing is to remember that this is the word of God, and not the words of men, and as such, it’s different from any other book we will read. (Perhaps praying from Psalm 119: 18 would be good: “Open thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law.”) But the best bit of advice for your friend?

It’s the same advice I’d give to someone who’s eating fish. Eat the meat, spit out the bones. In other words, enjoy what you can understand, and keep going when you get to passages that don’t make sense. Don’t stop, just because something doesn’t make sense. Keep going. And that’s good advice for us all. We can spend a lifetime reading and understanding God’s word. Every time we read it, we’ll find new treasures there. Just keep reading. And thank God for the gift of his word to us all.

Rally Day

Rally Day (beginning of the Sunday School year) will be held on Sunday, Sept. 10th. We bring the gospel to them.

Second, it's a chance for teaching and learning for children in the congregation, and those (think grandchildren, etc.) associated with the congregation.

Third, it's a chance for adults/older children to learn to serve. If you've wanted to "do something" at church, and hesitated because you didn't feel like you could make a long-range committment, here's a chance to do something that's for a day. And a chance to learn how things are done, and perhaps prepare you for further service later on. (Plus, it's fun. Plus, you get some pizza for lunch. : )

Even if you haven't already volunteered, just show up Saturday morning and help out. I invariably get different responses, unless someone in the class is on to my joke.

Because asking what day of the week Ascension's on is like asking what day of the week Easter's on: because it's always the same day of the week -- Easter on Sunday, and -- coming exactly 40 days after Easter -- Ascension is always on Thursday.

On Ascension, we celebrate Christ's leaving His disciples, and returning to the Father. Of course, he is always with us, as He promised in Matthew 18:20 (" For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them") and Matthew 28:20 ("I am with you always, even unto the end of the world") but on Ascension, Christ is no longer visible to us, and His church no longer hears Him directly, but through His ministers.

And we celebrate that change, that time when our Savior is not visibly with us, but is with us in His word, and in His sacraments.

We'll be celebrating with a time of prayer at noon this Ascension, Thursday, May 25th. Come for prayer as you are able and remember our Savior's ascending up to with the Father.
<img width='1' height='1' And when you do, sometimes a choice has to be made: dinner or midweek service?

Well, we're taking part of the choice away. You can come straight from work -- or whatever -- and get supper at church before the service begins.

We'll be having soup suppers every Wednesday, prior to the midweek service. Supper will begin around 6:45, lasting until 7:15. (The service begins at 7:30).

We also need folks to sign up for bringing soup. I thought they were good FAQs for new folks at a church -- whether at Redeemer or elsewhere.

Attending church somewhere for the first time can be intimidating. Here are some frequently asked questions.

Will you make me stand up and say something?
We won't embarrass you in this or any other way. We want you to feel comfortable and at home with us. Church should be an enjoyable and uplifting experience, and we promise to do all we can so you can learn about your Savior.

What if I will say or do something wrong?
All of us feel this way when we're faced with a new situation, but our church family is full of ordinary people like you. We will do our best to make you feel at ease with us.

Can I just watch at first or will I be pressured to be involved?
We believe that the most important thing is to trust in the Lord Jesus Christ for forgiveness and salvation, but it takes time for this to be cultivated. People need time to evaluate and decide if they want to get further involved. We respect this need.

What if I don't know that much about the Bible?
The purpose of the church is to help us learn about the Bible and God's Word. Worship services and Bible study classes are opportunities to grow in our knowledge of the Bible and faith in Jesus.

Will I be asked to give an offering?
Don't feel compelled to give an offering. We want all offerings to be made freely and with joy. We believe offerings are gifts of love for God, so no one dictates what each person is to give. We pass an offering plate during the sermon so that our worship may include bringing gifts to God. Offering envelopes are available to members to keep their gifts a private matter. You may wish at first to learn more about our ministry before bringing your offerings to God through our church. But you are welcome to participate as the Holy Spirit leads you to give.

Removing the Christmas Decorations

It hardly seems possible, but the Christmas season is over, and it's time to remove the Christmas decorations from the sanctuary. She had recently been living in Raleigh, near her son's home. She had cared for her husband, Howard, at home for many years while he suffered from Alzheimers. He passed away a few years ago. Her son John died several years ago.

Gloria's funeral service will probably be held this Friday at Redeemer, but final details have not been completed yet. We'll post further information when available.

Today Gloria heard her Lord's words, "Well done, thou good and faithful servant." (Matt. 25:21) We will miss her, but she is now in that place where her sufferings are past, and her service is rewarded.

Covered Dish for January

Since the first Sunday of the month for January is on New Year's day, we're postponing the covered dish until Sunday, January 8.

Be sure to come hungry on the 8th!

Sunday school information for New Year's Day

Just a head's up for this coming Sunday: the children's Sunday school class will not meet this Sunday. Congratulations, Mary!

Writer sees life through father’s eyes

Mary Flower Carter moved to Burlington three years ago

By Jim Wicker Times-News

When Mary Flowers Carter was growing up in New Bern in the 1940s and ’50s, the most convenient way for her family to visit relatives in Vanceboro was to take the creaky, well-worn ferry across the big Neuse River.
The old ferry, which operated long before and after Carter made the crossings, has been gone for many years. But it, along with almost everything else in her formative years, planted the seed for "Lest We Forget," her recently published novel.
Carter, who moved to Burlington three years ago, said the 238-page work is "written through the eyes of my late father, George Henry Flowers." The author, 65, said most of the book is based on actual occurrences during her childhood and adolescence.
An educator for 38 years, her career included teaching writing at Indiana University and Gary (Ind.) Community College. She said she used vivid memories of her day-to-day life with her parents and five siblings, events and hometown fixtures to spin her story of people and their lives in coastal North Carolina.
"‘Lest We Forget’ intertwines history and accounts of everyday life," Carter said. She said the stories are told in the book by "Joey Bloomfield," the fictional name she uses for her father, an uneducated but deeply caring and hard-working construction worker.
"My father, although he couldn’t read and write, was determined that I would go to school and college and get an education," said Carter, who worked at Macy’s in New York after high school to earn money for college. It was a happy day when she returned home.
"Dad was so proud the day I left for Winston-Salem State University that he immediately started telling people I was a teacher," she said. "I wasn’t, but that caused me to work hard so I’d not let him and my mother down." Carter graduated in 1962 with a degree in education.
She was employed for 37 years by the Gary, Ind., school system. For 30 of those years, she was a classroom teacher. David Tessmann to install him as the new pastor. Pastor Tessmann graduated from Concordia Theological Seminary in Springfield, Ill., and met his wife, Janet, while doing his Vicarage at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Fraser, Michigan (1967-68). He was ordained at Grace Lutheran Church in Clarksville, Tenn.
Their first son, Jonathan, was born in 1970 in Dothan, Ala. Their daughter, Kimberly, was born in Blytheville in 1973. In 1975, David was called by the Missouri Synod to represent them as a missionary to members of the armed forces as an Army chaplin. David was first commissioned in Blytheville in June 1975. His first assignment was at Ft. Bliss, Texas — while there he received his Master of Divinity from Concordia Theological Seminary. In June of 1978, he served as chaplin to the 8th Army Drug and Alcohol Rehab Clinic at Camp Case, Republic of Korea. Their second son, James, was born in Hawaii in 1978 while David was assistant division artillery chaplain at Schofield Barracks. Through theological training and chaplin service, he rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel and also became chief of the Administrative Division at USACHCS. In 1966, he retired from the Army and accepted a call to be pastor of Peace Lutheran Church, Texas City, Texas, where he served for nine years.
He retired from active ministry on Oct. 31, 2005. David and his wife, Janet, and daughter, Kim, moved to Burlington in November when he accepted the position at Redeemer Lutheran Church as emeritus pastor. David is also enrolled in the doctor of ministry program at Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, Missouri.
Redeemer Lutheran Church is located at 2306 Lacy St., Burlington. Sunday Bible class is at 9:30 a.m. Sunday, 11 a.m. worship service and Wednesday 7:30 p.m., Advent service.

Hurricane Relief Update: How You Can Help

Katrina Update-November 23, 2005

Dear friends and fellow servants in Christ,

As we come together to thank God for His blessings to us and then begin the season of Advent we focus on the ultimate gift of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, let us again remember the needs of our brothers and sisters in Christ in Louisiana whose lives have been dramatically changed by Katrina. Please consider helping them have celebrations that are filled with His love and compassion in one or more of the following ways.

1. Atonement Lutheran Church and School has given the SED office names of five additional families who have requested our prayers, love and support as they recover from the ravages of hurricane Katrina. Please prayerfully consider sponsoring one of these families and bring extra joy to them as they approach the Christmas season. We continue to receive notes of thanks from families who have been touched by the care and compassion of their sponsoring congregation. The SED is making a huge difference in many lives, and it would be wonderful if all 70 families had a sponsor by Christmas. Please note that sponsoring a family is not intended to be a huge financial commitment. Most important are the prayers and compassion extended to these hurting people. Please review the guidelines for sponsoring a family on the SED web site and discuss this with your congregation or a group within your congregation.

2. We have received from Atonement Church and School "Christmas Wish Lists" from 50 families. Most of these families have not requested a church sponsor, but find that they need assistance in providing their children with some special gifts at Christmas. This would be a perfect project for a Christian Day School, Sunday School, Confirmation Class, youth group, LWML. Men's group, small group, etc. Please contact the SED office at disasterhelp@se.lcms.org and we will fax you the request forms. Packages should be shipped to Atonement since mail service is not yet up and running in all areas of New Orleans.

3. Lutheran Social Services has given the SED the names of several Katrina evacuee families who have relocated to theD.C. area and are in need of "Christmas Wishes". Please let us know if you would like to assist in this way.

4. Lutheran Disaster Response TENT CITY at Atonement is up and running! Now they need volunteers to fill the tents and provide the man power necessary for clean-up and reconstruction. The LDR contact person at Atonement is Jessica Vermilyea who can be contacted by cell phone (985-630-4217) or email lavermilyea@aol.com. She shared that she has over 250 work orders waiting for a volunteer, so your time and talents are needed. You CANNOT just show up there! You must contact her ahead and reserve your space so she can plan her work week. Please let SED know if you plan to go down . At this time, we are aware of three groups going down and would love to be sending many more.

If you have any questions or wish to respond to any of the above requests for help, please contact the SED at disasterhelp@se.lems.org or call 1-800-637-5723 Ext. 215.

Many thanks to the many congregations, groups and individuals who have responded so lovingly to these wonderful families whose lives have been changed in so many ways. You are powerful reminders of the love of Christ that overcomes all adversities and the hope that we have in Him each and every day of our lives.

May God continue to bless our ministry to all His children!

In His <>< service,
Deaconess Liz DeMik
disasterhelp@se.lcms.org

Covered Dish Dinner for December

We're moving our covered dish dinner forward one week this month, to Sunday, Dec. 11th. St. Paul is very plain: "The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ?" (I Cor. 10.16) Anyone who receives the Lord's Supper receives in their mouth the body of Christ broken for us on Calvary, and the blood that was shed for the forgiveness of our sins.

What's more, Paul warns us that we are to examine ourselves. Examine ourselves that we receive the Supper in a worthy manner. The way to worthily receive, of course, is to believe the word of Christ, and trust in His mercy. The Small Catechism puts it well: "Fasting and bodily preparation is, indeed, a fine outward training; but he is truly worthy and well prepared who has faith in these words: Given, and shed for you, for the remission of sins."

Since we are blessed at Redeemer to receive that body and blood every Sunday, we have thought to provide a time for further reflection for those receiving the Supper. Once a month (on the 3rd Sunday), we'll be having a time of reflection and confession.

This service-before-the-service will begin at approximately 10:40, in the sanctuary. It will be a time of scriptural admonition and confession, and should last 15-20 minutes.

This new service is not a requirement for communing. However, like private confession, it is a gift for those sensing a need to strengthen their faith, we welcome anyone who would like to check out how they might use it to strengthen their faith. If you have other questions, contact Pastor Tessmann, or one of the elders.

Voters Meeting

Redeemer's semi-annual voters meeting will be held on Sunday, December 11th, following the morning service. had a lengthy phone conversation today with Pastor David Tessman, who is on our call list. The call seemed to go well a number of our members participating.

The call service will be next Sunday, July 31st. We'll have the call service after a covered dish dinner. The service should be held around 1:30 p.m. Pastor Joe Dzugan (circuit counselor) will lead the service.

Please plan to be there for the service! If you are unable to be there, please email John Kinsey at mskjsk@ mebtel.net and let him know.

As important as your attendance (probably more so) are your prayers. Pray that God's will be done in this call process. Lots of folks are vacationing, but God's word takes no vacation, and services continue here for the summer.

Bible class (for adults, and anyone else interested) is held each Sunday morning at 9:45. The Divine Service follows at 11, with Holy Communion each Sunday.

There is no children's Sunday school for the summer. Sunday school for the children will resume the first of September, and the exact starting date will be announced here.

A word of encouragement, too: when you're traveling, seek out the services of God's House wherever you are. You can find a congregation in our fellowship by either checking out the LCMS annual (we've got one available at church) or through the LCMS website:

www.lcms.org, and click on "directories."

While it sometimes feels awkward to visit a church where we've never been, it can be a great joy to meet other Christians, and you will almost always feel very welcome wherever you go.

A New Beginning

I'm trying out a new look for Redeemer's website, and welcome your thoughts and suggestions.

Putting the site in a blog format will -- I hope -- improve it in several ways.

First, I can update much more easily. I have 2 other (personal) active websites, and one is updated daily, and the other at least once a week. The other format I had for the site was difficult to update, and I know it was frequently out of day, and for that I ask your forgiveness.

Secondly, a blog tends to be more readable. Information will be placed in short, bite-sized pieces, and I think folks will be able to get their information more easily.

Finally, a blog is more easily readable by search engines, and should be more accessible to readers.

Thanks for your patience, and I'll see you Sunday!

Jim
